New PiRA and New PUMA

Available in June 2020, New PiRA and New PUMA are brand-new editions of the trusted PiRA and PUMA tests. They make it easier than ever to reliably assess attainment and progress in reading and maths. Updated to reflect current teaching practice and completely re-standardised in 2019-2020 on thousands of pupils, these termly tests (also available in paper and online, auto-marked, interactive format) allow comparisons against current national averages. These new editions also come with diagnostic profiling and next-step tailored intervention activities.

New PUMA

  • Standardised in 2019-2020 on thousands of pupils.
  • Papers work alongside White Rose Maths and Maths Mastery, meaning that results reflect the curriculum that pupils are being taught.
  • Increased number of marks in the Year 2 Summer paper enables diagnostic profiling at the end of KS1.
  • Increased number of harder problem-solving questions and marks added to each KS2 test, resulting in a gradual increase in test demand.
  • Balanced tests each term, building on the previous year’s curriculum in Autumn and Spring and ensuring all maths skills are tested each term.
  • All papers are full-colour, making them more engaging.
  • Revised question order, with arithmetic questions first, followed by reasoning. This better reflects the National Test structure and gives enhanced practice.
  • More space for answers provides more room for pupils when working out complex problems.
  • Tailored interventions report outlines next-step ideas for individual pupils or groups, saving you lots of time.

New PiRA

  • Standardised in 2019-2020 on thousands of pupils.
  • Increased number of inference, comparison and vocabulary questions that reflect National Test question coverage even more closely.
  • Phonics in Year 1 tests have been replaced by reading for meaning, to match the curriculum.
  • Increased number of marks in the Year 2 Summer paper allows for an increased diagnostic profile at the end of KS1.
  • Additional marks added to the Year 5 and Year 6 papers. This provides an opportunity to stretch and track progress of pupils working at greater depth.
  • Strands reflect the National test content domains, resulting in consistent and informative diagnostic profiling.
  • Tailored interventions report outlines next-step ideas for individual pupils or groups, saving you lots of time.
