We have developed intervention grids for each PiRA and PUMA test. They suggest targeted interventions to carry out from our intervention resource, On Track Maths. This means that it's easier than ever to identify appropriate individual or small group intervention activities for the areas of weakness demonstrated in your pupils' test results.

What diagnostic information do the tests provide?

The GAPS, PiRA and PUMA results can be converted to provide a full diagnostic profile for each pupil.
The profile provides:

A standardised score

This allows you to immediately see whether the pupil is above or below the national average for their year.

An age-standardised score

This allows you to see how the pupil is doing against other pupils of the same age.

Performance indicators (for PiRA, PUMA and GAPS)

These show whether pupils are meeting performance expectations for their year (working towards, working at, or working at greater depth).

A reading age, maths age, GPS age

These allow you to get a quick measure of progress against the age the pupil’s performance is typical of.

A Hodder Scale score

This is an independent measure of progress throughout primary that allows fine monitoring of pupil progress and the prediction of future performance.

How were the tests standardised?

Over 22,000 pupils took part in the standardisation of PiRA, PUMA and GAPS. Pupils were tracked termly over a full academic year, taking the appropriate test at the same time as your classes will take them. The schools were from both urban and rural settings, with a nationally representative demographic mix. To ensure the validity of the results, correlation studies were carried out to compare teacher assessments (and former National Curriculum levels) to the sample results.
