On Track Maths

Ensure all children keep up in maths with targeted, same-day intervention 


On Track Maths is a new intervention resource that enables teachers to identify gaps in children’s knowledge and understanding across the primary maths curriculum covering KS1 and KS2.  Once the gaps have been identified, the resource provides short, targeted, same-day intervention to put the child back on track in time for their next steps.

The On Track Maths concept
"Children can experience obstacles to learning caused by a lack of understanding of fundamental concepts. How to use On Track Maths at your school


Step 1 - Select children who require intervention
Use classroom observation and children’s work to identify children who may require intervention in a
specific area of the maths curriculum.

Step 2 - Identify secure knowledge
Use the identification grids in the Teacher’s Guide to map children’s secure knowledge and understanding. This will help identify at what point and in which year of the curriculum their understanding falters.

Step 3 - Plan intervention
Each year of the curriculum has a clear programme of 20-minute lessons for each topic. Select the
appropriate set of lessons from the Activity Pack – starting from the last secure base of knowledge.

Step 4 - Deliver intervention
Deliver the lessons, one per day. These are carefully structured to build sequentially, strengthening
and reinforcing learning.

Step 5 - Assess
On the final day of the intervention, assess what each child in the group is able to do
independently and identify the next steps for their learning.

Sample Lessons for 5 Day Intervention - Key Stage 2, Year 3 - Count and Represent Numbers
The following 'Count and Represent Number' lessons are to be used for a 5 day intervention. The first four lessons should be used to teach and reinforce children's learning. On the 5th day of the intervention use the Activity and Assessment sheet to see what the child is able to do independently and then identify the next steps for their learning. Please note: There is no Year 6 material included for On Track Maths. The material provided is to help children catch up to their current year group.
