Need-to-know content for Year 5 in the new curriculum

Thanks to author Michael Tidd for the below blog post on how changes to the curriculum will affect teaching in Year 5. 

This page outlines some of the key elements of the new curriculum which are intended to be taught in Years 3 or 4, and which therefore do not appear in the new upper Key Stage 2 curriculum.

Teachers of Year 5 pupils will be aware that students may need to tackle these concepts in addition to the new higher demands in the Year 5/6 curriculum to ensure that they are on-track to reach expected levels by the time of the first new National Curriculum Tests in 2016.



  • Identifying themes and conventions in a wide range of books
  • Recognising some different forms of poetry, e.g. free verse, narrative poetry


  • Using fronted adverbials, with commas
  • Accurate use of present perfect and progressive forms of verbs

Grammar, punctuation and spelling

  • Learning the words from the Year 3/4 Spelling listgps
  • Use of the possessive apostrophe in plural words, including those with irregular plurals
  • Grammatical terminology: noun phrase, statement/question/command/exclamation, inverted commas, preposition, determiner, pronoun, possessive pronoun



  • Use of standard written methods for addition and subtraction
  • Use of standard written methods for short division
  • Addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator

Number & Fractions

  • Divide one-/two-digit numbers by 10 or 100
  • Understand place value to 2 decimal places
  • Count in tenths & hundredths
  • Recognise common equivalent fractions
  • Compare and order unit fractions
  • Find fractions of quantities
  • Round decimals to the nearest whole number
  • Use Roman numerals to 100 (C)

Shape & Geometry

  • Describe movements as translations
  • Use language of parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Plot points in the first quadrant
  • Using 24-hour clock and converting between 12- and 24-hour time
  • Solve problems converting units time
  • Know the number of seconds in a minute & number of days in each month, year & leap year
