Teaching Key stage 1 reading - Using John Lewis’s Moz the Monster to teach reading comprehension

Shareen Mayers headshotDue to popular request (from teachers and year 2 pupils), I have been asked to provide some reading resources and guidance for key stage 1 teachers that will support them with their teaching, learning and assessments. My focus has always been on developing pupils’ oral comprehension skills first (in a practical way) before a commitment to print.

I often use the term ‘picture to print’ to exemplify this. Furthermore, I think that it’s important to provide a holistic approach to teaching reading, writing, spoken language and grammar. The resource also focuses on the purpose for writing (to entertain) and how this can be used to teach a range of writing opportunities.

The planning will support teachers to teach reading, grammar and writing in a practical way that also supports pupils to improve their oral comprehension skills. It was written for year 2 teachers but it can be easily adapted for year 1 and year 3 pupils.  

It covers some of the KS1 content domains below (1b and 1d) but it was written using the national curriculum and has a real focus on teaching inference skills.
