Appearing before the Education Select Committee on Wednesday 22nd February, Schools Minister Nick Gibb confirmed that the times table check will go ahead in 2018-2019.
Proposals for a times table check in Year 6 were initially introduced by former Education Secretary Nicky Morgan in January 2016. These plans were then put on hold when her successor, Justine Greening, stated that there would be no new national tests or assessments introduced before 2018. With this in mind, Nick Gibb has now confirmed that the check will go ahead in spring 2019, when Year 6 children will sit the times table test alongside their SATs.
