KS1 pupils need to be able to retrieve information from non-fiction texts and answer a range of questions.
Reading content domains:
1a)  draw on knowledge of vocabulary to understand texts
1b) identify/explain key aspects of fiction and non-fiction texts, such as characters, events, titles and information

The sample materials for the KS1 reading test indicate that there is a greater range of question type. Pupils are required to: write long and short answers; match up questions; choose from a set of multiple choice questions and understand tables. Each double spread in this non-fiction book provides information in different ways and would be ideal to use in guided reading sessions. Teachers can explain how the reader navigates through a non-fiction spread and discuss diagrams; maps; tables; subheadings and introductory paragraphs. Once this text has been analysed in depth, teachers could use it as a frame for pupils to create their own non-fiction writing related to their topics.

Year 2 pupils often find it difficult to understand the concept of ‘true and false.’ Non-fiction texts can be used as a vehicle for pupils to act as detectives and discover if a range of statements are true or false. Providing pupils with ten written statements related to a double spread will motivate them to compete with their peers to prove or disprove the statements. Pupils can be given a simple frame to complete. The third column can be used for more able readers or for pupils where justifying their answer is a target.
