KS2 National Curriculum Assessment Results

On 31st August the DfE released the results of the KS2 national curriculum assessments and information about the 2017 performance tables.

2017 KS2 SATs results

This year there has been an increase in the proportion of pupils achieving both the expected standard and the higher standard in reading, writing and mathematics, compared with 2016.

The proportion of pupil’s achieving the expected standard has increased by 8 percentage points, from 53% in 2016 to 61% in 2017, and those attaining the higher standard has also increased from 5% to 9%.

Attainment has increased for both girls and boys, but girls continue to outperform boys at the expected standard – 65% of girls reached the expected standard compared to 57% of boys.

At the higher standard, 7% of boys achieved the higher standard in comparison to 10% of girls.

2017 Performance Tables

The DfE have also announced the headline measures that will appear in the 2017 performance tables ahead of their release in December.

This year’s performance tables will include the following attainment and progress measures:

  • The percentage of pupils achieving the ‘expected standard’ in English reading, English writing and maths at the end of KS2
  • The pupils’ average scaled score in English reading and maths at the end of KS2
  • The percentage of pupil’s who achieve at the higher standard in English reading, English writing and maths
  • The pupils’ average progress in English reading, English writing and maths

In 2017, a school will be considered above the floor standard if at least 65% of pupils meet the expected standard in English reading, English writing and maths or the school achieves sufficient progress scores in all three subjects.  This measure remains the same as in 2016, although there have been some technical changes for pupils working below the expected standard. These children will be given a mark on scale of 60-70, whereas last year these children were given a blanket 60 (find out more here).  Read more about the 2017 performance tables from the DfE here.
